Time to Fly Away

Our travels take us many places.  There is a general direction and, at times, a purpose.  The first week of travel is usually made up of one nighters, Walmarts,  rest areas,  and travel centers. Storms sent us directions we hadn’t really planned on.  It’s better safe than on course. Time to Fly Away.

This year, our first big stay was in Roswell, NM, at Bottomless Lakes State Park. Not really the direction we planned, but it allowed us the Roswell experience for better or worse. The park was fairly nice but the days were extremely hot.  Time to fly away.

Our next big stop was Datil Well Campground in Datil, NM. This was our main destination, our reason for the trip. It was an excellent experience. We had big dreams of buying land and eventually moving to the area or nearby.  Dreams, like life, have a way of changing course. The air was dry, dusty, and unfortunately smoky from fires lurking nearby. Time to Fly Away.

What we learned this trip was to dream along the way.  To let the trip dictate to us, not us dictate the trip. The fires pushed us further north. Chama New Mexico, to be exact. This turned out to be an amazing experience, one that we will never forget. Peaceful camping,  fresh air,  quaint town,  BBQ like no other and best of all the Cumbric Toltec train ride to celebrate Father’s Day. We had no idea what our Chama experience was going to be like, but it stirred in us a belief to take on life as a gypsy. Time to Fly Away.

The train went by our campground twice a day.

With a general idea of continuing North and chasing seventies, we moved onto Elk Creek Campground, a National Forest campground between Chama and Antonito (basically our train trip route). This campground was very different from our stay at Chama RV.  Very remote, no hookups,  and yes, No Tech!  It had instead 360° mountain views, pine scented air, cool nights, and my favorite,  hummingbirds, AKA dive bombers. It did have mosquitoes, but then who doesn’t. Without a dump station and easy access to water, our stay was wonderful but limited. Time to Fly Away.

Horca. The closest place to get service.

And here we are, a last-minute stay at our first Harvest Host of the year.  We are at Graykin Industries in Nathrop, CO. Our host creates custom metal art. Unfortunately, he isn’t home at the time, but hopefully, we will get to see his craft tomorrow before we once again have To Fly Away. In the meantime, we will enjoy the peace, the quiet, and a good night’s sleep. Fly Away, my friends.
