Roan Mountain Visitor Center

If you visit Roan Mountain, the Roan Mountain Gristmill visitor’s center is a must see.  The Gristmill has clean restrooms, a very nice gift shop, some educational areas that kids will especially like and the Mill itself, which has artifacts throughout.  Part of the river runs in front of the Vistor’s Center.  Fly fishermen were working the river on the day we went.  And lastly, a beautiful old working waterwheel rounds out the scenery.  The staff at the visitor’s center are very pleasant and helpful.

We hiked the Peg Leg Mine Trail an easy half mile natural trail that takes you to an ruins of an 1800s iron ore mine.  The mine shaft was closed for safety reasons, but you could tell where the entrance was.  My husband and son were fascinated by the ruins.  You could walk down steps to the entrance.  They weren’t as easy as I would have liked so I stayed at top, however it wasn’t too far down so viewing it wasn’t a problem.
